The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock was established in April 1985. The Department of Forests (DoF) was established in 1952. In 1961 the DoF was under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Forest.  The restructuring which occurred in 2009 has merged the forestry sector to rename the Ministry as the Ministry of Agriculture and Forests (MoAF) and the Department of Forests as the Department of Forest and Park Services (DoFPS). To prevent forest fire and support sustainable management of the country’s forest, department of forest are involved in designing and implementing a nationally coordinated forest fire awareness programme and enhancing people’s awareness about forest fire. Developing training modules and teaching manuals to district forestry sectors and liaising with the media in informing and educating the public about forest fire prevention, training the field staff and community in fire prevention and suppression. Village level fire management groups are another effective strategy designed for forest fire management to grassroots level. Members of local communities, businesses, students and private organization actively participate in forest fire suppression. All fire incidences reported to Social Forestry Division of the Department of Forests, through District Forest Office or Divisional Forest Office. The District Forest officers have the lead role in forest fire management at local level in close collaboration with local communities. Establishment of Community Forest help in reducing cases of forest fire due to slash and burn in the agriculture field.
